Prof. Faruk Sarkinfada, PhD / Team Lead of the Flaming Fund

A public health laboratory and quality assurance specialist with 25 years of experience on teaching, research, administrative, and personnel management, Faruk Sarkinfada has an in-depth knowledge of laboratory and health care systems as well as the policies and regulations that govern their operation in low- and middle-income countries. He has a vast experience in modeling of quality assurance systems and setting standards for national health surveillance
systems and laboratory services. He was a contributing author on the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine-led Fleming Fund 2016 report assessing surveillance capacity for antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi, and Nepal.

A professor of medical microbiology, Faruk served as the national laboratory consultant to Nigeria’s Tuberculosis Control Programme in the Global Fund Tuberculosis project and to Malaria Control in the Support to National Malaria Elimination Programme (SuNMaP)’s strengthening capacity of laboratory networks for quality-assured case detection. He contributed to the design and implementation of the national Drug Resistant Tuberculosis prevalence survey
in Nigeria. He is a frequent adviser to federal and state level health managers on laboratory capacity strengthening and quality assurance projects. He participated in the development of Nigeria’s National Medical Laboratory Strategic Plan. His experience in laboratory and community-based projects has focused on tuberculosis, malaria, and other infectious diseases.
Faruk also served as a Head of Department of Medical microbiology and the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Bayero University Kano Nigeria. He taught Medical and Health Sciences at the Khawarizmi International College, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (2017-2019).

Prof Faruk Sarkinfada is currently the Team Lead of the Flaming Fund Country Grant to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Nigeria.
